“Swimming Home”

As a child, playing hide and go seek was fun. That was, of course, until the day when no one found me….. Alone in a cubbyhole, below a large bookcase for thirty minutes, there was a slow diminuendo of activity in the house, until only the sounds of silence prevailed. Three scenarios ultimately came to mind…. I was occupying the greatest hiding place ever, the seekers had given up, or I had simply been “ditched”.

When I emerged, indeed the house was empty. No one outside. No note on the message board.

In that moment I recalled a culture known for throwing their least desired children into the sea, testing the child’s right to belong to the tribe……..true confession…..I still swim daily.

I remain yours in earnest,
